How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Discord

Quick Summary
  • Discord 2FA prevents account takeover even if your password is stolen
  • Use an authenticator app (TOTP) โ€” Discord does NOT support SMS 2FA
  • Discord also offers hardware security key support for FIDO2/WebAuthn
  • Save backup codes and store them in a password manager
  • Discord will periodically ask you to re-enter a 2FA code as a security reminder

Discord accounts are a frequent target for attackers โ€” hacked accounts are used to send phishing links to friends, steal Nitro subscriptions, and gain access to private servers. Two-factor authentication makes it much harder for an attacker to break into your account even if they have your password. Here is everything you need to know.

Why Discord 2FA Matters

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is the single most effective security measure you can enable on your Discord account. Without it, anyone who obtains your password โ€” through phishing, credential stuffing, or a data breach โ€” can log in and take full control.

Discord accounts hold significant value. Attackers target them to send malware-laced links to your contacts, claim your rare Nitro vanity, impersonate you in private servers, and steal moderation privileges from high-value communities. If you own or admin a server with hundreds or thousands of members, a compromised account puts your entire community at risk.

Discord enforces 2FA for anyone using moderation tools in servers that require it. Even if your server doesn't enforce the policy, enabling 2FA on your personal account is the best way to prevent hijacking.

How to Enable 2FA on Discord

  1. Open Discord on desktop or in your browser and sign in.
  2. Click the โš™ User Settings gear icon at the bottom left.
  3. Go to My Account.
  4. Scroll down and click Enable Two-Factor Auth.
  5. Discord asks for your account password to confirm. Enter it and click Continue.
  6. A QR code appears. Open your authenticator app, add a new account, and scan it. Alternatively, click I can't scan the QR code to get a text key you can enter manually.
  7. Enter the 6-digit code shown in your authenticator app and click Activate.
  8. Discord displays 8 backup codes. Download them and store them in a password manager or another safe place.
Discord requires 2FA for server moderation. If you run or moderate a server that has "Require 2FA for moderation" enabled, you must have 2FA active on your personal account to use moderation tools.

Discord's 2FA Options

Authenticator App (Recommended)

Any TOTP-compatible authenticator works with Discord. Popular choices include Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, and password managers with built-in TOTP like 1Password and Bitwarden. See our best authenticator apps guide for detailed comparisons. After entering your password, Discord asks for the 6-digit code from your app. This is the most reliable and secure method for most users.

Hardware Security Key (FIDO2 / WebAuthn)

Discord also supports hardware security keys such as YubiKey, Google Titan, and SoloKey. A hardware key provides phishing-resistant authentication โ€” you simply tap the key to verify your identity. This is more secure than an authenticator app because the private key never leaves the device. You can set up a hardware key in User Settings โ†’ My Account โ†’ Add Security Key after enabling 2FA. For a comparison of both methods, read hardware key vs authenticator app.

Backup Codes

Discord provides 8 single-use backup codes when you enable 2FA. These work as a fallback if you lose access to your authenticator app or hardware key. Save them in a password manager before clicking "Done" during setup.

Note: Discord does not support SMS text message 2FA. Unlike some platforms that offer SMS as a primary or backup method, Discord relies solely on authenticator apps, hardware security keys, and backup codes. If you see references to SMS 2FA on older articles, they are outdated โ€” Discord removed SMS 2FA for most users in 2023.

What Happens After You Enable Discord 2FA

Once 2FA is active, every sign-in from a new device or browser will require both your password and a verification code. Existing sessions on devices you are already signed in to are not affected immediately. You can manage and end active sessions under User Settings โ†’ Devices.

In addition to login protection, your account's QR code login feature is disabled when 2FA is active, which prevents an attacker from scanning a malicious QR code to steal your session.

Discord may also periodically prompt you to re-enter a 2FA code during sensitive account actions as a security reminder. This is normal and does not mean your account has been compromised.

Backup Codes on Discord

Discord provides 8 single-use backup codes when you enable 2FA. Store them in a password manager or somewhere safe offline. Each code can only be used once. If you run out or misplace them, you can generate a new set โ€” see below. Never store backup codes in the same place as your authenticator app (e.g., on the same device screenshot folder).

Viewing and Generating New Backup Codes

To see your backup codes after setup, go to User Settings โ†’ My Account and click View Backup Codes next to the 2FA section. This requires re-entering your password. You can also regenerate fresh codes here if your old ones have been used or compromised. Generating new codes immediately invalidates the old set, so update any stored records.

Troubleshooting Discord 2FA

"Invalid Code" Error

If Discord shows "Invalid Two-Factor Code," the most likely cause is a time sync issue. Open your authenticator app and check that the displayed time matches your actual time. In Google Authenticator, go to Settings โ†’ Time correction for codes โ†’ Sync now. For Authy, close and reopen the app to force a time sync.

QR Code Won't Scan

If the QR code on the Discord setup screen won't scan, click I can't scan the QR code to reveal a manual setup key. Enter this key into your authenticator app by selecting "Enter setup key" or "Manual entry" instead of scanning.

Lost Authenticator App With No Backup Codes

If you have no access to your authenticator app and no backup codes, your only option is to contact Discord Support with proof of account ownership. This process can take several days and requires providing details such as your registered email, phone number, and payment history (if any).

Lost Access to Discord 2FA?

If you cannot access your authenticator app, click Lost your 2FA code? on the Discord sign-in screen and enter one of your backup codes. If you have no backup codes and no access to the original authenticator, contact Discord support. The recovery process involves verifying your identity as the account owner, which may take several days.

Enabling 2FA Requirement for Your Discord Server

As a server owner, you can require all moderators to have 2FA enabled before they can use moderation actions. Go to your server's Settings โ†’ Safety Setup โ†’ Moderation and enable Require 2FA for moderator actions. This protects your community from scenarios where a moderator's account gets compromised and used maliciously.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Discord require 2FA?

Discord requires 2FA for server moderators and admins when the server owner enables the "Require 2FA for moderation" setting. It is optional for regular users but strongly recommended to protect your account from hijacking.

What authenticator apps work with Discord?

Any standard TOTP authenticator app works with Discord, including Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, 1Password, and Bitwarden. See our best authenticator apps guide for a full comparison.

Does Discord support hardware security keys?

Yes. Discord supports FIDO2/WebAuthn hardware security keys including YubiKey, Google Titan, and SoloKey. You can add one under User Settings โ†’ My Account โ†’ Add Security Key after enabling 2FA.

Does Discord have SMS 2FA?

No. Discord removed SMS-based two-factor authentication in 2023. You must use an authenticator app, a hardware security key, or backup codes to sign in.

What happens if I lose my phone with the authenticator app?

Use one of your 8 backup codes to sign in. Once in, disable 2FA in User Settings โ†’ My Account and re-enable it on your new phone with a fresh authenticator app.

Can I use 2FA on multiple Discord accounts with one authenticator app?

Yes. Most authenticator apps support multiple accounts. Open your authenticator, scan the QR code for each Discord account during setup, and they will all appear in the same app with distinct account names.

How do I disable Discord 2FA?

Go to User Settings โ†’ My Account and click Remove Two-Factor Auth. You will need to enter your current 2FA code or a backup code to proceed.

What Happens When a Discord Account Without 2FA Gets Hacked

Discord accounts without 2FA are stolen daily, and the damage goes far beyond losing the account. The first thing attackers do is install a self-bot or abuse the account's membership in your servers to send spam and malware links as you. Because the messages appear to come from you, friends who would never open a strange link from a stranger will often click one from you.

On shared servers the fallout is worse: a hijacked admin or moderator account lets the attacker mute members, delete channels, and hand out roles to accomplices before anyone notices. Discord requires 2FA before it will let you manage a server as a moderator for exactly this reason โ€” the requirement is not an inconvenience but the platform's main line of defence.

Recovery is possible but slow. If the attacker changes your email address, you must prove ownership to Discord Support with the account's creation date and payment history โ€” a process that can take days. That delay is exactly why the two-minute setup now saves you a week of lost access later.
